Malicious False Email - You may have received an email message from a group identifying itself as THE RPI HELPDESK TEAM or the RPI SUPPORT TEAM. This message asks you to confirm your email account by providing your RCSID, your password, and your date of birth.

This is a phishing SCAM aimed at obtaining personal information, which would give unauthorized persons access to Rensselaer computing resources, using your user name and password. More details

security

suspicious face Suspicious e-mail? Suspicious attachment? Be aware! Never give out personal information in a reply to an e-mail message. For example, the Internal Revenue Service has issued several recent consumer warnings on the fraudulent use of the IRS name or logo in an effort to gain access to consumers’ financial information. And similarly, don't open an attachment unless you know the sender and are expecting it.

To run Matlab or NX5 when you are off-campus, you need to connect using the VPN to show your Rensselaer affiliation. Follow these instructions.

update
symantec Be sure that you are running version 10.1.6.6010 (Windows XP) or version 10.2 (Vista) of the Symantec anti-virus software. Download and installation instructions. Note - you will have to uninstall a previous version before installing this new version and reboot your machine. Be sure to keep the virus definitions up-to-date.

If you have a T60 or T43p laptop, you can re-image your laptop with Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate. We recommend that you do a clean install, rather than an upgrade to Vista.

Since each Vista install requires a unique product key, before re-imaging you must purchase the media (which comes with a unique code) from the Rensselaer Campus Computer Store for $20. You must present the SIS page that shows your laptop status as being a participant in the Mobile Computing Program. After you have purchased the media and code, come to the Help Desk to re-image your laptop. This image is only a base image and includes Office 2007. More information about re-imaging.

Tips

  • Back up your files!
  • Make sure to run Symantec Anti-Virus software with the most up-to-date virus definitions. You can get the absolute latest virus definition updates from the Symantec web site. Download the -x86.exe file.
  • Clean up your hard drive -- delete old files and uninstall applications you no longer need to use. This saves space and the laptop might boot faster.
  • Don't open attachments or follow links without verifying that the sender meant to send them to you.
  • Configure your computer to run as a general user not as an administrator.
  • Configure your mail client not to preview attachments or display images.
  • Install the Microsoft updates that come out monthly.
  • Run/update Microsoft's anti-spyware software available at www.microsoft.com.
  • Students: You can apply for a Resnet static IP address and firewall change (for running a web server) on-line.
  • Writing your thesis? Templates are available for LaTeX and Word.
