Dialup

An important announcement regarding Rensselaer's dial-up service

The members of DotCIO's Information Technologies Infrastructure wish to inform the campus community and all dial-up users that support for modem pool access to the Troy campus will be discontinued as of January 1, 2011. This will also affect dial-in modem access to (518)244-1500 and 1-888-647-3744.

The modem pool access is being discontinued for several reasons, but primarily because the user base has been declining over the past several years, and the equipment is aging and is becoming difficult to support. In addition, while a significant investment would be required to replace equipment to continue this service, network access via local providers such as cable and DSL is relatively inexpensive and accessible.

Until such time as this service is terminated next January, Information Technologies Infrastructure recommends that all modem pool users explore other options for their network access. Verizon DSL and TimeWarner Road Runner services are locally available, and there are many ISPs which offer inexpensive dial-up access; some examples include Earthlink, AOL, and NetZero, which offers unlimited dial-up for $9.95/month.
