Disabling Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) -- Windows Vista

Support for Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6), a new suite of standard protocols for the network layer of the Internet, is built into the latest versions of Microsoft Windows Vista.

However, Rensselaer does not currently support IPv6, and it can also cause connectivity problems on our campus network. As a result, we strongly encourage all users with Windows Vista installed on their computers to disable IPv6 in order to prevent any temporary network disconnections.

Please note that you should follow this procedure for both your network (wired) and wireless connections.

  • Click on the Start menu and open the Control Panel.
  • Open View network status and tasks.
  • Click on Manage network connections (wired), or Manage wireless networks (wireless). Both options are located in the menu on the left side of the screen.
  • Right-click on Local Area Connection (wired) or Wireless Area Connection (wireless).
  • Choose Properties.
  • In the Local Area Connection Properties window, make sure that the following options are not checked. (If they are, remove the checkmarks.)
    • Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
    • Link Layer Topology Discovery Mapper I/O Driver
    • Link Layer Topology Discovery Responder
  • Reboot your laptop so the changes take effect.
