Requesting Public Access Wireless for an On-Campus Event

It is possible to have public wireless access enabled for conferences, meetings, or other events when RPI is hosting guests. Requests can only be made by faculty or staff responsible for the event.

Public wireless access will enable users to connect to RPI's wireless network without authentication and encryption. The connection will be in front of RPI's firewalls; users will not have access to campus resources not available to the public. Note that this service is available on campus only where wireless access already exists.

The following restrictions also apply:

  • No outbound SMTP
  • No outbound ping
  • No access to vpn.net.rpi.edu
  • Outbound connections known to be associated with viruses or vulnerabilities are blocked, including TFTP, SNMP, MS RPC.
  • No inbound connections

Public wireless should be enabled only for the duration of the event. RPI's secure wireless network remains enabled as well.

At least 3 business days before the event, submit the Request for Public Wireless Access Form. You will need to include the campus location(s) of event, the start and end date and time of the event, a brief description of the event and the expected number of guests. Guests should be instructed to connect to SSID rpi_public.
