Migrating from POP3 to IMAP in Outlook 2003

About This Document:
This document provides instructions on how to migrate from using our POP3 service to the new IMAP service, when using Microsoft Outlook 2003. Migrating from POP3 TO IMAP is, in practice, a three step process. The first step is to EXPORT data from Outlook's POP3 profile. The second step is to configure Outlook to connect to IMAP. The third and final step is to OPEN your exported data from within your new IMAP profile.

Export your data from your Outlook POP3 profile:

  1. On the file menu, select File --> Import and Export...
  2. On the Import and Export Wizard window, select Export to a file. Click Next.
  3. Create a file of type Personal Folder File (.pst) Next.
  4. Select your Personal Folders Click Next.
  5. Select a location where you wish to save the .pst file to. We recommend saving this file to your My Documents Folder Click Finish.
  6. Acknowledge any prompts that follow after clicking Finish

Setup your IMAP account:

  1. Follow the instruction for setting up an IMAP account located on the helpdesk website.

Open your exported data in your new IMAP profile:

  1. On the file menu, select File --> open --> Outlook Data File...
  2. In the file browser window, navigate to the location where you saved your exported data, in pst file format.
  3. Select your data file and click Open.
  4. Your old data should now be visable under All Mail Items Labled Personal folders.
  5. You can now drag anything from this local data folder set into your IMAP inbox.
  6. Please keep in mind that any data placed in your new IMAP account inbox will count against your quota, however, if left in your local data pst file, will not.
