This article contains suggested configuration options for
using Eudora with IMAP, and informatino on how to the IMAP
delete/purge cycle works with Eudora.
Before reading Eudora should be configured for IMAP.
Instructions for converting an existing Eudora POP3
configuration to IMAP are in: Converting
Eudora from POP3 to IMAP. Instructions for configuring a
new IMAP account in Eudora are in: New
Eudora IMAP Configuration.
IMAP Configuration options
-
The first step is to speed up Eudora. By default, Eudora
will wait 20 seconds before performing background
actions. For POP3 this is tolerable, but for IMAP it is
excruciating. Go to the "Tools/Options..." menu, and scroll
down to ``Background Tools'':

Change the "Wait for" value from 20 to 0.
-
Under "Checking Mail" enable interval checking.
5 minutes is a good value. Also change "If Available,
STARTTLS" to "Required, STARTTLS":

If you are often operating offline, you may want to
check the "Don't check without a network connection"
checkbox.
-
If you use a ``trash'' folder for deleted messages, on
the "Incoming Mail" page select the "Move it to:" button,
and select the IMAP TRASH folder:

Note: If you use the default, local to your
desktop/laptop, Trash folder Eudora will download all
deleted messages from the IMAP server and store them
locally. This will force the download of deleted
messages---even those you do not what to see. Also, the
IMAP trash folder can be seen from all of IMAP clients.
But, the name of the TRASH folder used by each IMAP may
differ (see: Why do I have more than one ``Trash''
folder? in the IMAP FAQ). By default Webmail uses
"TRASH", but you can change this in the Webmail
configuration.
-
If you use Eudora from a slow dial-up connection, you
will get better performance by turning off the preview
pane:

The preview pane is displayed below opened mailboxes. It
is a handy way to view a message. But, it forces Eudora to
download selected messages from the IMAP server. If you are
connected by dial-up, and the last email sent to your
account is a huge attachment, Eudora will start downloading
it for preview. The preview pane is just fine, however, on
fast networks.
-
On the other hand, if you are on a fast connection you
might want to download a copy of all messages. To do this,
select ``Incoming Mail'' and click the "Full message except
attachments over'' radio button:

If you like, you can set the attachment size to
1000 k (1 meg), or higher to prevent downloading
the largest attachments. This also creates a cached copy of
messages, so you can read them while disconnected from the
network.
That does it for configuration settings. It is now time to
view your email.
Deleting IMAP Email in Eudora
Deleting email in IMAP is a two step process: the message is
first marked for Deletion, and then marked messages are purged
from the folder. Some IMAP clients, such as Webmail, perform
both steps at once. Eudora requires a separate Purge step.
You can see this two step process by enabling displaying
deleted messages in a folder. Right click on Inbox, and select
``Show Deleted Messages'' from the menu:

Then delete a message. The message will now show with a red
flag indicating it has been marked to be deleted on the next
folder purge:

To purge the deleted messages, select "Purge Messages" off
of the "Message" menu:

Purging is such a common, and necessary, operation that it
will be handy having a shortcut. Fortunately, Eudora makes this
easy to do:
-
First right click on an unused portion of the tool bar.
The tool bar displays the shortcut buttons above the folder
index. Usually the area to the right is clear. Select
"Customize...":

-
This will open a tool bar "Customize" window. Select
"Message" to display buttons corresponding to the "Message"
menu:

We are interested in the icon that looks like a broom.
If you click on that item the "Description" box will say
"Purge the deleted message(s) from this mailbox (IMAP
only)"
-
Drag and the broom icon to the tool box (to the right of
the Trashcan icon is a good place), and close the
"Customize" window:

That's it. You now have a "Purge" button on the tool
bar. When there is are deleted messages to purge from the
open folder the button is active.
You night want to turn off the "Show Deleted Messages"
option now. To do this, right click on "Inbox" again, and
select "Show Deleted Messages." This will turn to option off,
removing the check.
