When I delete email on WebMail, it still shows up in Outlook (and, other email clients).

WebMail stores email on the IMAP server, and only uses the POP3 server for new incoming email. By default, it does not know which email messages on the POP3 server correspond to messages on the IMAP server.

You have two choices to fix this. The first is to configure your other email clients to use IMAP instead of POP3. IMAP will show you the same email as on Webmail, and visa-versa. Most email clients support IMAP, including Outlook, Thunderbird, Eudora, etc. If you are using multiple email clients IMAP is the recommended option.

For more information on switching to IMAP see the Email/IMAP helpdesk pages.

The second alternative is to configure WebMail to attempt to delete messages from the POP3 server when they are deleted from WebMail's TRASH folder. To do this, follow these steps:

  • Go to the "Options", "Account Info" page.
  • Check the "Deleting email from TRASH deletes from POP3 server" option.
  • Save the options.

Now when you empty the TRASH folder, or delete a message from the TRASH folder WebMail will search for the corresponding message on the POP3 server and remove it. (Or, simple when deleting a message if the TRASH folder is disabled.)

If you only, or mostly, use the WebMail client you can have all old email removed from the POP3 server. To do this:

  • Go to the "Options", "Account Info" page.
  • Enter 0 in the "Days to keep email on POP3 server" box. (You can also enter 1, 2, or some other small number.)
  • Save the options.

This tells WebMail to remove read messages from the POP3 server. The longer messages are kept on the POP3 server, the slower your "Get new mail" will be. But, if you are enabling this option, you are likely better off moving the the IMAP server.
