Web Server Limitations & Server Side Scripting

Rensselaer's central web servers host www.rpi.edu as well as many related and unrelated web sites provided by members of the campus community. To meet its functions of education, research, and administration, Rensselaer's web presence must maintain the highest standards of availability and performance. Because of this, server side scripting and application development is not allowed on the public web server. Development and deployment of applications and services not accomodated by Rensselaer's public web server require other arrangements.

If you are a student wishing to host your own web server, you will need to make a request to the hostmaster to open port 80 for your machine. Please read the article: ResNet Traffic - Firewall for more information.

For departments, Communications & Middleware Technologies, a unit of the Division of the CIO, produces and supports web services that meet campus-wide needs and other Institute priorities. As a finite unit, C&MT leverages its resources to provide the maximum possible benefit to the campus community. Please contact C&MT with requests for special web server functionality. C&MT may already have tools that meet your needs.
