You can lose valuable files on your laptop through a
malicious virus, a hardware failure, or an error on your
part.
-
Anti-virus software: First, we strongly
recommend that you take advantage of the anti-virus
software license that we have with Microsoft. Students who
are part of Mobile COmputing Program and department members
who are part of the Microsoft Campus Agreement can install
Microsoft anti-virus software off our
website. Updates can be done over the Internet. Keep
your virus definition files up to date and enable real time
protection.
For others, Microsoft offers Security Essentals
anti-virus software at no cost through a free download off
the Microsoft web site.
-
File backups: The second thing we
recommend for data security is to run regular file backups
using an external hard drive. USB flash drives also work
well for backups, but they are small and can be easy to
lose. In addition to using external devices to back up your
files, an online backup program called EZ-Snapshot service
is also available, and allows each person to back up data
over the network. The first 10 gigabytes of compressed data
are free.
Please refer to the Help
Desk website for more information about the EZ Snapshot
backup service.
Please note that sites such as Google Docs and
Microsoft SkyDrive offer cloud-based storage space, and are
not affiliated with RPI.
