All NX Users Required to Utilize New Server by May 14

To enable the latest version of NX -- which is version 8 and complies with Siemens' new license file format -- as of Monday, May 14, 2012, all users must utilize the new server named licsrvr8.arc.rpi.edu in order to continue using any version of NX. The actual NX license server licsrvr5.arc.rpi.edu will be shut down at the end of the day on Friday, May 18, 2012.

Windows 7 users

Two steps are necessary to continue using any version of NX on Windows 7 machines.

Step 1 -- Change the System Environment variable

There are two ways in which to do this; please choose only one of the methods given below.

  • Right-click on the Computer icon, then click on Properties.
  • Click on Advanced system settings, and then click on Environment Variables.
  • Under the System Variables pane, scroll down to locate the variable UGS_LICENSE_SERVER. Highlight this variable and then click on Edit.
  • Make sure the Variable name remains UGS_LICENSE_SERVER, but change the Variable value to 28000@licsrvr8.arc.rpi.edu.
  • Click OK three times, and then close the system property window.

Another way for accomplishing the change is by downloading the updated variables. To do this:

  • Download the nx.reg file.
  • The system should prompt you to Run or Save; click Run.
  • In the User Account Control window, click Yes.
  • A Registry Editor warning message will appear; click Yes.
  • A second Registry Editor Info message will appear; again, click OK.
  • Restart your computer.

Step Two -- Add and/or Delete Bundles

After the system is restarted and you are logged in:

  • Click on Start, click All Programs, and then click UGS NX 7.5.
  • Click NX Licensing Tools, then License Options.
  • A message stating "Previously selected bundles ACD is unavailable and will be discarded." Click OK.
  • Under the Available bundle(s) listing, the ACD30 option should be highlighted; click on the Add>> tab, and ACD30 should then show up on the right pane.
  • The ACD31 option should now be highlighted under the Available bundle(s) listing. Again, simply click on the Add>> tab, and ACD31 will show up in the right pane.
  • Click OK to close the tool.

Please note that, depending on the state of your system, ACD (without any number) may be displayed under the Available bundle(s) pane. If this happens, highlight the option and click <<Remove. This will enable you to add the two needed bundles, ACD30 and ACD31. Also note that the tool will not permit you to add more than these two bundles!

Mac users

Two steps are also necessary to continue using any version of NX on Macintosh computers.

Step 1 -- Change the System Environment Variable

There are several ways to accomplish this. One way is given below.

  • Download the free RCEnvironment tool, which may be useful to modify the system environment for other applications.
  • Once installed, the utility ($ENV) shows up at the bottom in the System Preferences under Other items. Double-click on it.
  • A GUI opens up; click on the plus symbol (+) to add the new variable.
  • Under Variable, type in UGS_LICENSE_SERVER ; under Value, type in 28000@licsrvr8.arc.rpi.edu.
  • Click Save.

Step 2 -- Add or Remove Bundle

  • Click Go, then open the following folders:
    • Applications
    • UGS
    • NX7.5_Apps
    • NX Licensing Tools
  • Click the Licensing Tool icon.
  • If the ACD option already appears in the right pane, click on it and then click << Remove.
  • In the left pane, click on each item and click Add >>. When you see two items listed under the Selected Bundle(s) on the right pane, click OK.
